In todays workshop we learnt the basics to editing on the software 'Premiere Pro'. This software is easily used from YouTubers to Hollywood film such as 'Deadpool'.
When looking at the interface there are four different sections (quarters):
Top Left - Video that changes dependent on the contents
Top Right - Links to what is in the timeline
Bottom Left - Project window (like finder)
Bottom Right - Timeline
Rushes - Name given to the completely unedited footage
Bin - Folder (derived from film cameras prior to modern technology when film strips that correlated with one another were put in a shared bin)
Log - Footage that will be used
When trying to access content in the project window, use the small triangle next to the icon to drop down the content and double click the icon to open the footage in the top left video view. There are multiple ways to play the footage, one way is using the play button, another is clicking the space button and lastly is dragging the playback head with the cursor (this is called scrubbing).
In order to make a 'Log Bin' and transfer our footage without ruining the rushes, we had to make a new bin using the folder icon in the bottom right of the project window. Then we had to copy the rush using the edit section in the drop down menu on the Mac and paste it into the bin. Then we renamed the copied version once it was in the new bin to make it easier to access and see what it is without having to click through each shot. We were advised to not move or delete footage directly as it would make it much harder to find further along in the edit. Also, it is safer to manually copy and paste the rushes rather than using shortcuts as it risks ruining your work and confusing the software.
Subsequent to learning this information we learnt how to start editing together the sequence. To cut the clip to the starting and ending point without cutting any of the rush (which is quite permanent) we used "I" for 'in' and "o" for 'out'. Then we dragged the picture to the timeline. Some important rules to remember while editing include:
1. the footage placed above will always be the footage that plays
2. make sure the sound files to clash in with one another
3. when trying to trim the clip, move the arrow head to the end of the clip until the red brake appears
4. line up the footage in the timeline (shown on the top right video view) with the footage in the top left view to ensure a clean editing
