Pitching Ideas

Today we pitched our ideas to the class, giving and receiving feedback on our ideas and the potential they have when creating an opening title sequence. I presented my first idea (Idea 1) and it was brought to my attention that it would be difficult to get a range of shots in a moving vehicle and too many over-the-shoulder shots would make it seem too 2-dimensional or low budget. Additionally, there would be certain continuity issues in changing angles and other cars on the road. However, my idea plays upon a common fear in women and urban tale, this being beneficial for the 'thriller' genre I chose for this idea.

My favorite idea pitched by another member of the class was Daisy's idea. Her pitch depicted a French girl who moves to the UK to go to boarding school in the 70s and moves in with a host family. While living with this family, she falls in love with the girl from the family and the film follows their love story and how it is a secret because it is frowned upon to have a homosexual relationship at the time. While they were out, someone sees them together and reports it back to the family. Following this, they try to kick out
the girl and send her back to France but the two run off together and live in the woods. Daisy spoke about the opening title sequence with such detail that it was easy to visualize and I really like the style that it's presented in. Beginning with an establishing shot of a house and a track inwards to someone stood in a window, it then cuts to a man reading a newspaper (the titles would appear in or around these objects - eg one of the newspaper headlines is a credit). The camera then cuts to clothes being folded and placed into a suitcase. Possibly to indicate to the French element the titles would appear in both English and French (translations). Subsequent to this there would be shots of objects or paintings around the house, then a close up of one of the girl's faces as it pans down to her pressing play on a cassette player. The music starts and the other girl (in the other country) begins dancing in her bedroom (linking them through music before they have even met). Another shot idea is one girl putting earrings in looking in the mirror and the shot moves along to the other girl doing the same thing but it her seperate bedroom (transition looks like they did it next to each other. Finally, the suitcase shuts and the main title appears on the case.
