Saul Bass - Bonjour Tristesse Analysis

Bonjour Tristesse

Bonjour Tristesse follows Anne as she travels to the French Riviera and visits her recently deceased friends' wealthy husband. His high maintenance daughter, Cecile, becomes afraid that Anne's prim and proper demure will change their current lifestyle and attempts to push them away from each other. She calls upon his young French mistress, Elsa, for help. However, they are unaware that Anne's attitudes are a layer to hide her fragility and pain - Cecile's plan may carry dire and tragic consequences.

The warm toned shapes that travel across the frame during the exposition of the opening title sequence immediately indicates to some sort of travel or movement. Perhaps this establishes Anne's character to be the warm toned shapes that travel as she goes to the French Riviera.
The contrast of blue and red balance the warm and cool tones within each other however the sharp and spiked shapes and contrasting colors foreshadows some type of conflict, possibly between Anne and Cecile. The graphics onscreen are parallel to the sound as the music changes to a more melancholic atmosphere, the title sequence follows. The tears stream down the screen and foretell the audience of Anne's tragic consequences.

The final image is very effective as it demonstrates the juxtaposition between the sadness and romance throughout the film. The tear is prominent on screen and provided as a transition from the last sequence, the detail of hearts as the pupils in the eyes indicates to the underlying theme of love.
