Method 1 - Steal Like An Artist:
Concept: that there is no truly original idea left to tell
- Accepting this allows us to intentionally be inspired by other forms of art and media
1. Felicity Wishes - Emma Thomson
- A magical world/ Utopia
- Popup books, made it exciting and different
2. I Believe in a Thing Called Love - The Darkness
- Reminds me of fun car rides with my Brothers and Dad
3. Vienna - Billy Joel
- Melody of the piano is soothing with lyrics that relate to me
- Reminder to live in the present and slow down
4. She Moves In Her Own Way - The Kooks
- My dad and I's song
- Light hearted/ good mood
5. Trapped - CBBC
- Completing tasks to escape
- Adrenaline and Tension as a child
6. Mr Stink - Roald Dahl
- Put lives of the homeless into perspective to me as a child
- Opened my eyes to the rest of the world
7. Lola Rose - Jacqueline Wilson
- Similar to Mr Stink, opened my eyes to domestic abuse and the idea that all families are different
8. Middle Eastern Rugs
- Remind me of growing up in Asia + Middle East
- International
9. Clean up song
- reminds me of cleaning our classroom in primary school
10. Everyday - David Levitham
- different body everyday - extremely unnatural?
Discussion in Class:
Harry Potter - loved by all
^ one person disagrees as they feel it is fraudulent - lies on a large scale?
^ lies - Hip-Hop Hoax?
Shrek - relationships
^ Fiona chose ogre over a prince
^ challenges societal ideas of attraction
^ idea of happily ever after never leaves us from childhood to adulthood
Method 2 - The Question Game:
Concept: question "What If"
5 What If Questions:
1.What if we lived in a dystopia?
- How we be under control
- Would we revert back to ways of life in the 1900s
- Would we repeat every action
- Would we know we're living the same day over and over?
- Would we be in the position of ourselves ages ago
- Would we be able to communicate
4. What if there was no poverty in the world and everyone was happy?
- Would the world still turn
- No competition = any advances?
5. What if technology was never developed?
- Would we still live as we used to?
- What advances would society have made?
Method 3 - Emotional Rollercoaster:
Concept: readers must invest in your story - emotionally
- Playing with emotions can be a powerful idea to generate a story
Emotions and events that trigger it:
Joy
Grief
Sadness
Anger
- people being treated badly
Regret
Hope
Fear
Peace
The purpose of brainstorming is to develop a concept rather than come up with a core plot
- like a seed of inspiration, not a fully grown tree
Who is the protagonist?
What is their goal?
How do they plan to achieve their goal?
What disaster will throw your protagonist off balance?
Who or What will oppose them?
What is the core conflict?
